Drink now, or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant before serving. Birgit Eichinger founded her winery in 1992, as one of the first woman winemakers in Kamptal, and Austria as a whole. She is a native of the region and produces an excellent range of Austrian whites on her 15 hectares of vineyard, including some delicious expressions of Riesling. This is a family endeavour, as Birgit is supported by her daughter Gloria and husband Christian, a skilled builder. The winery is located just outside Strass village, with a direct view of the Gaisberg vineyards. “Ried Zöbinger Gaisberg” indicates that this is a single vineyard wine, the most specific designation of origin possible. Typically, these wines are complex, full of character, and excellent for ageing. This is certainly true of this fine Riesling - intoxicating scents of peach, white flowers, and lime rise from the glass. It is an attractive pale yellow, and harmonious and taut on the palate. Notes of juicy pear and apple, lemon zest, and fine minerality marry beautifully. It is an archetypal expression of the Gaisberg vineyards, at its very best when served slightly chilled. Perfect company for fish dishes, or some Austrian poultry dishes, such as schnitzel with a slice of lemon.
