Founded in 1966 by Robert Mondavi, this is one of Napa Valley's most important wineries, regarded as the initiator of the modern Californian wine industry. Today the Robert Mondavi brand, part of the giant Constellation Brands since 2004, produces a wide range of wines from a wide selection of varietals and vineyards spread throughout the Napa Valley, including the sites of Carneros and Stags Leap. The wines of Robert Mondavi Winery include some valuable labels such as Woodbridge and Private Selection and collectible wines such as those from the legendary To Kalon vineyard. Impressed by the Sauvignon Blanc wines of the Loire Valley, Robert Mondavi brought this style to the United States by defining a separate category that set a trend for many California wineries. The wine undergoes a short maturation in oak barrels, but despite this, it does not present the typical buttery aromas of a Chardonnay. The perfectly integrated wood gives it only a slight and characteristic refinement. The wine reveals fruity hints of grapefruit and stone fruit, floral notes, some herbaceous nuances and green peppers. On the palate, it is fresh and light, with good acidity and a mineral note that is felt on the finish. Served well chilled, it is the ideal wine as a summer aperitif or in combination with seafood or salads with goat cheese.
