As soon as you pour a glass of this vibrant Primitivo you’ll notice the enticing inky purple hue and evocative aromas of cassis, crushed blackberries, and hints of rose petals and dried lavender. The first sip reveals a generous full body, ripe tannins, and intense dark berry and cherry flavours that linger long on the tongue. Winemaker Filippo Cassano set up his winery in 2003 following his dream to return to his family’s traditional viticultural roots and he named his project Polvanera after the typical dark soils found in this corner of south-eastern Puglia. Since then he has been instrumental in revitalising the image of Primitivo with his perfectly-balanced creations which combine vivid fruit flavours and aromas with a distinctive freshness. For this bottling Filippo carefully selects the grapes from his Marchesana vineyard near the town of Gioia del Colle which is planted on iron-rich red soils over a layer of limestone. He then does a short maceration and fermentation for 7 days followed by 6 months of ageing in stainless steel tanks and an additional 3 months ageing in the bottle. This helps to preserve the pure varietal character of the Primitivo and create a fresh, fruit-forward wine ideal for sharing with friends.
